Last week I made a cake for my sister's 50th. I made the little twisty fondant curly streamers the day before I needed them. When I went to put them into the cake - sticking up - they were very fragile and some broke.

I haven't worked with fondant very much. How long does it take to fully dry? Will it dry rock hard? Does it soften up again when in contact with buttercream?

I have seen some use gumpaste - is this different (I have never used it before) And some use 1/2 and 1/2 - how is this done (i.e. - how is it mixed?) Is it better to mix it?

I have a cake to make for next Saturday with a figure on it and a hanging banner made of fondant. When should I make these items to have them dry completely?

Thanks in advance.

I have also been having some problems with getting fondant pieces to dry. I have just bought some Gum-tex to help my fondant dry. I had been using MMF but I have also bought Wilton fondant for the pieces that need to hold their shape and dry.

Here are some links that might help you.
