First Time Working With Luster Dust

Hi! I'm new to this board so please tell me if this is the wrong folder to post this in!
I am doing a fondant covered cake for my grandparents 65th anniv.
this weekend and I am planning on using luster dust and sparkle dust brushed on dry on the side of the cake for sparkle/highlighting. The problem is I've never worked with the stuff before! I have been studying techneques in decorating mags and online and the past few days so I *think* I'm good for dry brushing but I want to do silver luster dust painted on to fondant bows that will be my topper. I guess my question is a matter of second guessing myself and wondering if I should go ahead an paint it on or dry dust it on. I know if I go with the "paint" it will cover evenly and solidly but if I brush it on dry will it too cover in a solid layer? ![]()
Please any help, sugestions, pointers you could offer would be great! Thank you so much!! ![]()

By using it dry, it wont be a thick layer of color, if that's what you mean. I mix a little bit of luster dust with lemon or clear vanilla extract to achieve a consistency (about the thickness of milk) to paint it onto fondant and gumpaste. Some people use clear alcohol like vodka because it dries fast.
Thanks Annalisa and rezzycakes for the quick reply! ![]()
By using it dry, it won't be a thick layer of color
So if I colored the fondant lt. grey and then applied the silver dust I could get a kinda sparkley matt finish look? And if I mix the dust with vanilla and paint it on I'd get a glossy finish?
Thanks again! ![]()

You got it! I would do a small test batch to see how deep of a grey to use before you colored the whole batch though, just to make sure you will get the effect you want. You might not need that much color in the fondant. Also just be be clarify, use CLEAR vanilla for the paint method.
Fantastic!
I will do just as you said and try some tests before I attempt the whole schabang! Will let you know how things turned out! Thanks!

great questions!
I use luster dust mixed with vodka or clear spirits to paint on for a shiney effect, that way u can also do more coats for a better effect.
