I just saw a cake done with the stained glass method. How is this done? If you do it from a pattern, how do you get the pattern on the cake? Is this something that can be done on buttercream, or just fondant? Thanks!

I've done this using black or dark brown royal icing to outline and filling in with piping gel on a fondant cake. You should be able to do the same on a buttercream cake.

Use the pin-prick method to transfer the design or free hand.

ok, this may be a silly question, but when you say you fill in with colored piping gel....do you put it in a bag with a smallish tip and pipe it in or do you paint it on? icon_smile.gif

Put it in a parchment piping bag and flood onto the cake directly.

I place it in a piping bag and pipe it on. I find I have more control of the piping gel doing it that way.
