Adding powedered cocoa is what I did with my royal icing to make the bug bodies. Once dark brown I added a bit of black food colouring and it worked great. icon_smile.gif

Thanks for the info...I still can't find the dark cocoa. Went to 3 major grocery stores yesterday. Thanks again, can't wait to try it once I get the cocoa!

I just did a quick search and you can buy it online...and some other brands which might work too. I did see some on amazon.com for 22.00 or something but it is like 3.2 pounds of it (mine was 8 ounces for 3.19 or something). It was under the gourmet section.

Hey guys - I've made several cakes with black MMF. If you check my photos -there's the race car, the leather jacket, and the Star Wars cake. Instead of using cocoa, I added a square of melted unsweetened chocolate to the melted marshmallows so it turned brown (this was a large batch, using a full bag of marshmallows. I may have even used 2 squares- now I can't remember!), and once that was stirred in, I only had to add enough black to go from brown to black - and it took a lot less work and a lot less color than going from white to black! That way, if you can't find the cocoa (by the way, that Special Dark makes the yummiest chocolate buttercream in the history of chocolate buttercreams!), just use unsweetened chocolate which you can get at any grocery store. And chocolate MMF tastes so good - very important if you're doing a large area in black, like I had to do! Have fun!

I use my 8 year old dd to help color fondant. She know's how hard it is to make black. I showed her this thread when it started and she was amazed by the results of the dark cocoa powder, as was I.

So tonight, her and I were at the grocery store...in the cake isle of course....and we both saw the container of Dark Choc. Cocoa and started to reaching for it at the same time...then we had a good mother daughter cake decorating laugh.

If you can't find the "Dutch Processed Cocoa" in your supermarket. Try adding a bit of Baking. Soda to the regular cocoa powder. This method takes out the acidity from the cocoa powder and that makes a Dutch Processed Cocoa Powder. I can't remember the correct ratio but you can check this site "www.baking911.com" and search for dutch process, I think that's where I found that info. Goodluck!

That is interesting...I dont know if it would make the cocoa any darker though. I was just using it because it was a dark cocoa. i am not sure maybe there are some other dark cocoas that arent dutch processed. ???
