I've never done anything special with a cake board... for smaller cakes, I just use the cardboard circles that you can buy - I know, boring - and for larger ones, my husband so nicely cuts a board for me and I wrap it in foil...

What do you do to make a cake board special??

I have been doing the same as you, but just recently started trying to liven them up icon_lol.gif ...I have covered them with cool scrapbook papers and matching ribbon around the edges and it is turning out much nicer!

I may try a bigger board with wrapping paper and see how that looks...less seams icon_rolleyes.gif

Yeah.. so you know where I'm coming from. Let me know what you find that works!

I've heard of people covering the board with fondant... I'm just not sure about that, I don't know why - I guess its the ONE THING I can touch... and if I cover it with fondant... then what? lol How do you transport it? I just don't understand...

I may try wrapping paper or scrapbook paper.. that's a good idea, there's so much variety there! And it would give me so many ideas for the cake too!!!

I wrap mine in contact paper, cover with fondant on top, emboss/paint on the fondant. I also use a ribbon that matches the cake on the side of the board.

To transport, place hands under the board. The fondant dries hard if you cover it a few days ahead. This helps keep it nice without any finger dents and smudges.

So its just the top that you cover -- aahh. For some reason I had it in my head that the fondant wrapped around the board.

Where do you buy embossers?

you can foil wrap and then use clear colored or printed cellophane (often used for gift wrapping) etc. i know sometimes i'm in a pinch i'll use butcher paper even icon_smile.gif one time i was out of foil so i used christmas wrap and then saran over it so the grease wouldn't ruin the paper icon_smile.gif

For embossers, I use PME crimpers: http://www.globalsugarart.com/search.php?search=crimpers&searchimage.x=0&searchimage.y=0

and/or Holly Products embossing sticks. I got my sets from a cake convention in the U.K. directly from Holly products. I think Sugarcraft carries a some of the sets.

A friend of mine has used foil giftwrap on her oversized cakeboards. It repels grease, looks nice, and makes a pretty border around the cake. I personally haven't tried it, but it really added to the presentation of the cake.

For embossers, I have a purchased set and I also use buttons and clean rubber stamps!!

Anything with a raised print on it will work, just experiment with left over fondant and see what will work.

Buttons!!! What a great idea! I'm doing a baby shower cake next weekend, and I'm putting 'quilt's on the top of each layer - that will be a great addition to emboss the squares with buttons!!!! Awesome idea!

I'm going to need to buy some other crimpers and embossers... so many things!!
