Is it best to put decorated cakes in a cake box after they are decorated? so the icing does not dry out. I had not been getting boxes but I thought better of it. Especially if the cake is decorated a day in advance and not the day of.

Does the cardboard box really help the icing from not drying out? Or would the box need to be a plastic box like a rubbermaid turned upside down? I was always afraid to put cakes in plastic thinking the humidity would make colors bleed or icing melt.

Thanks,

PS this is the most helpful site I have ever seen!

I think airtight containers can trap in too much moisture and just a cake box can cause a cake to dry out.

If I'm storing a cake in the fridge, I put it in a cake box and then cover it using a plain, white trash bag. You won't want to get the scented kind or the kind with drawstrings. Once it is going to be at room temp, I take the bag off.

If I'm storing at room temp, I put the cake in the box and then cover the top and sides of the box with plastic wrap.

Both the coverings can be removed before the cake is picked up or delivered.

COVER IT IN A BOX!

I didn't with my first star decorated cake, and the stars were a little crusty/crunchy. The cake was out for 1 1/2 days before serving. I knew it could be left out at room temp, but I didn't realize I had to cover it! Silly me.

Take it from me, cover it like Lisa says!

I know a few women on this site say to use the cake box and the unscented garbage bags.

I place my cakes in cake boxes. Sometimes I cover them with plastic wrap and sometimes I don't. They come out just fine either way.

I put my cakes in the refrigerator and then in a cake box when it is ready to be delivered. I usually tell the customer to put it back in the refrigerator if it will be for the next day. I have never had any problems!
