Yesterday I made the house recipe of the WBH (Whimsical Bakehouse). It turne out great, it's smooth and shiny and it went on the cake, literally like butter. I used it for a cupcake cake. Great buttercream to work with. Still, I wasn't too crazy about the taste. Although it felt like silk in my mouth, I could taste the crisco. Also, it didn't take color well. I guess it's because of the consistency. Great for frosting, not so great for decorating. What do you think?

Oh, I know all about this too...until someone on here (thanks!) told me to use hi-ratio shortning and it is sooooooo much better. You can't taste the shortning with the hi-ratio. I too found that it went on like butter...very nice to work with and from now on, it's the only icing I will use unless they want something alittle sweeter. I also added another 1-2 cups of icing sugar and another 2-3 tsps of vanilla...just to add to the taste.

However, I found that it piped pretty good...I haven't tried to make roses or anything like that with it, and maybe the Wilton BC would be better for somethings like that...but I found it held it's shape very well. The 2 tier cake in my photos was with the WBH icing (I used the vegetable shortning for this before I knew better...) and although I didn't do anything like roses, I found the border held up and the cornelli lace was easy to apply.

Try the hi-ratio shortning...much better IMHO

Would someone please post the recipe for the WBH buttercream? Or, if you want, you can PM me with it. I have a large cake due on Friday and I would love to use this icing. icon_smile.gif

Thanks,
Sandra

I love the WBH Buttercream too! I am going to try it with the high ratio shortening.

For color, in the book from WBH, it says to ude candy coloring ( Wilton) for this recipe and you'll get alot better color. I think because of of the oil base.

Where do you get hi ratio shortening? I've heard about it before, but have no idea where to buy it.

I get mine locally at a cake decorating store. Here's a link for hi-ratio shortening from Country Kitchens: http://www.countrykitchensa.com/catalog/product.aspx?T=1&productId=619115
