I have a request to do a Clifford the Big Red Dog birthday cake for a 1 yr. old. I have an idea for the sheet cake, but they want a smash cake also. I don't really want to do a paw print or a dog bone. I don't know that much about Clifford, does he have friends, what does he like to do?

Any suggestions will be appreciated!

I am giving this a bump.

Also, what color is Clifford? I know he is the big red dog, but any pictures I have looked at he is kind of an orange color.

Any suggestions on the color mix would be helpful also.

I just did a Clifford cake for DD in March. I made a dog house and a RI Clifford on the door way. You could make the dog house the smash cake.

Just an idea. Good luck icon_smile.gif

I LOVE Clifford! He is on PBS and here is a link to the PBS website with him. I hope you find inspiration there.

RIP John Ritter who used to be the voice of Clifford icon_cry.gif I was thinkin the doghouse too or one of his buddies, T-Bone, Mac or Cleo,(smaller dogs, good for smash size) or Emily Elizabeth (his owner). (Can ya tell I know the story well LOL) - I was very thankful my niece changed her mind about Clifford last year and went with WInnie The Pooh instead- UGH @ all that red icing icon_eek.gif

Good luck with that!

Sure, it is usually a little cake the birthday child gets all to themselves. Usually on the first birthday and they make a mess in it and "smash" it all over themselves, high chair, ect.. Great for photos--bad for clean-up icon_lol.gif

I'm late on this one, but if your main cake is going to be clifford, the smash cake could be his food dish.

Food Dish I didn't think of that. That would be a lot easier than shrinking down a puppy clifford. I wonder if you can still buy stainless steel dog bowls? Upside down (if the underside is open)it would make a great cake pan. What do you think about that?

That would probably work, although I think you could just do a 6 inch round, ice it in a single color, then do a "rim" and a stripe around the base with a different color.

Write "CLIFFORD" on the side, put something (cheerios) on top to be the dog food, and you have a baby-safe dog food bowl without buying a lot of extra stuff.

Please post a pic of whatever you do, can't wait to see it!

Laura.

I'm probably being banal for suggesting this, but in Clifford Puppy Days, the dog dish is solid blue- I'd imagine that's the one the birthday girl is familiar with since the old Clifford pretty much went off the air before she was born. However Big Clifford's dish was yellow (and I'm really crazy for pointing that out, which is an admission how much I used to watch the show icon_lol.gificon_redface.gif )

Any help I can get is help. I never watched the show I just know of him from seeing pictures here and there. My kids are too old for Clifford. But we have a new generation starting so I better "bone up" (ha!ha!) on my cartoon characters.

Not sure when you need to do this, if I am to late I am sorry, but another idea for later.

I searched for this picture online so i could give credit where it needed to go, but I can't find it, so it might not be on the net anymore. I found this probably 3-4 years ago now. It is so simple and can be used on anysize round cake.

This one was iced with red buttercream, but I might suggest red fondant so the baby doesn't have red icing all over. If you don't want to go with fondant i would pick up one of the red spray food colorings and do light coats (like spray painting) until desired color is achieved.

I just had a revelation! YAY LOL
The vast amounts of red seems to be thumbsdown.gif for a variety of reasons, one being mess.

So here's my suggestion:
(big pic is aerial view, dog dish would actually be a dog dish shape with (the above suggested) cheerios perhaps) (call Kelloggs, tell em you have a new use for their cereal LOL)
