I got a call from someone who is having a party for her 3 yr old nephew on sunday. She wants a thomas cake just for her nephew and then a sheet cake for 40-50 ppl. She wants the sheet cake to be in the shape of a torah scrolll. I guess I can figure that out. But she wants 35 hebrew words printed on it. I tild her that that is a lot of writting and that it may not all fit or be very tight and small. Well she is set on it. I told her that I don;t feel comfortable doing that many words on a cake b/c i don't think it would look good. She didnt; care. Well I do. This is my reputation and I am still new. Do I tell her I can't do it? or just do it any way and hope for the best?
Also i charge $2 a person for a sheet cake but i feel i should charge extra for the amount of writting. What do you think?
and one more Q. The thomas cake she wants a 3d cake for one kid. I feel like its a lot of work and want to charge accordingly, but its only a small cake. any ideas on that? Thansk for the help.
For the writing, have her print out what she wants on computer paper (typed) and then take it to a local grocery store that has an edible image scanner and printer. They should scan and print it out on an icing sheet for you no problem and it will prob cost $8-$12 (include this cost in your charge for the cake). That way it will all fit and look neat and you don't have to worry about mis-spellings or anything because it will be exactly a copy of what she provides.
As for the charge for the 3-D cake, small cakes are usually harder to do than larger ones because the detail work is so fine. I would have no problem charging $50 for the cake. If she balks at the price, explain that she is paying for your time--don't forget that in the time it will take to make this "little" cake you could do several other cakes that aren't as finicky! You could then offer to do a simpler cake that is still Thomas the Tank Engine themed for less $$. Then it is up to her which cake she wants to go with.
