I am so excited! My co-worker asked me to make a cake for her son's 21st birthday next week. It'll be my first paid cake, so I want to make sure she'll be happy with it. She requested a 9x13" size, yellow cake with chocolate frosting (which she requested be "soft", whatever that means). As for trim, she mentioned his favorite color is hunter green...I had to talk her out of red (red against chocolate would look strange IMO), but I don't know what to put on top. This is for a guy I've never met, so I don't know much about him except that he likes animals (wants to be a vet). I thought animals would be too "cute" for 21 yr old, but I'm at a loss on what else to do! What do you think? And would $25 be too much for that size?

Is he in college? I would assume so if he wants to be a vet. Do a FBCT of his school's logo or mascot.

For example, if he goes to LSU, since they are the tigers, you could put "Have a GRRRRRRRREat birthday!"

If she wants it soft then how about an FBCT - say a simple pic of a vet holding a doc's bag and a dog next to it, or a cat.

Or I was just yahoo searching veterinarian pages and paw print came up- how about an FBCT paw print on top in hunter green? I'm thinkin hunter green wont really stand out though against chocolate. But if she wants that then hey lol

I just did a 21st birthday cake, a half sheet, with a champagne bottle popping its cork, confetti and streamers - all this was the request of the birthday girl. I put her name on the champagne bottle as the vintner. She also requested a bead border to represent a string of pearls. Most clients are not nearly this specific about detail.

Thank you! I love it too! And so did my client!
No, not a FBCT, it was a freehand drawing on the cake icon_smile.gif

That's a cute idea, Oceanspitfire! Although.... my writing isn't all that great and I don't think I could fit all of that on the cake! I'm famous for going too big and then squishing the last few letters onto the edge LOL

by the way, I just figured up the cost of the cake, including the cake board and box. Using the cake mix extender and a double batch of frosting, the total comes to $10.03. Is that what ya'll normally come up with?

take that times 3 so cost to customer at least $30.

Oh girlfriend!!!! You feel guilty about charging 30 bucks for a delicious cake that you've labored over and poured your heart and soul and talent into?????

Stop that! $30 is a steal for the cake you're about to create.

Truly, it is. I looked at the cakes in your photos -- you are very talented!!!!

Again. $30 is a steal for your co-worker.

Just a hint re fitting writing on there- all you'd have to do is plan it out- and can 'cheat' and do I think what people suggest on here is RI on wax paper (with your chosen text printed on paper underneath-) - just measure the width/height of your cake area where text will go- and fiddle around with it on paper (in Word for instancE) til you get the right size. Then you won't be overdoing it at the beginning and scrambling to fit in at the end. (Plus as you say your writing isnt all that great, which I'm sure it is icon_razz.gif but anyway, good way to make 'perfect' lettering- numerous ways listed in the forums here that I've seen!

This might be a little "girly" but I thought this cake was really cool-I dont know if the mom wants a "drinking inspired" cake though! I think the cake is by twins5485:

Thanks for the ideas everyone...
I might use one of those images that Doug sent the links for-either FBCT or if that doesn't turn out, I'll outline and do a star fill-in (ugh! so tedious!).
Never occured to me that I could make my letters using Royal icing and then just put them on my cake! That is genious! I'm sure to have some extra Royal Icing left over from my Wilton II class tomorrow night. I'll have to put that to good use...

Yay it's done! The chocolate frosting didn't turn out like I expected, but overall I'm happy with the way the cake turned out. I think I need to start planning the design of my cakes before hand, because once I started the border I kept adding different things and now it looks too over the top LOL. Thanks DOUG for sending the link to the image I used! And thanks to Oceanspitfire for the royal icing letters idea. It worked great; I think that will be my method for lettering from now on!
