I wanted to make a rocking horse out of fondant for a cake topper...(my first time messing with MMF). I tried free-handing it, and it wasn't the best looking one..plus, I had trouble getting the legs to support the weight of the body once I tried putting them together.

I see so many gorgeous firgures...do you guys use molds? Or are you just wonderful sculpters? Also, When do you put the body and legs together...after they've dried or just after they're a litle stiff?

There are many talented sugar artists at this site so it would not surprise me at all if they molded their figures by hand. But for those of us that are learning, one of the tricks that the professionals use is supporting their figures with dry spaghetti noodles. I just read about it in Debbie Brown's Enchanted Cakes for Chilren book.

Plus, she uses sugar glue to adhere the pieces and lets it dry supported on foam in the position she wants it posed in.

I have not had a chance to try any of these techniques yet but judging from her cakes, Debbie Brown knows what she's talking about.

Good luck.

Thanks for the help...I ended-up deciding this particular piece didn't necessarily need to be a "figure". It needed to be a little larger anyway. I think I'm going to try maybe a cookie cutter shaped like a rocking horse thru some rice-crispie treats..then mold the MMF around that shape.
