I agree Duncan Hines mix of your choice - I love golden yellow. BAke it in 2 - 8" rounds. Mix up some buttercream and have fun!
Well in the Wilton classes you start off with the star tip. Bake a cake, level it and ice it smooth. Once the frosting has set up a little take a cookie cutter like a flower, heart, star something basic. Press it into the cake enough to imprint in the frosting and outline it with a tip two or three then fill it in with a star tip. (Squeeze a star move tip next to it and squeeze another star until inside is filled.) Use single stars for your top and bottom borders. It's a very simple start and if you use bright colors it can be really cute.
If you dont already have the basic tips, I would suggest buying the course one kit and starting from there.
It explains the basics step by step and also explains the functions of your tools.
Im not sure of your experience level, but signing up for classes is a great way to learn. I find its much faster to watch somebody else do the basics and then develop more advanced skills from there.
Good luck!
