I am rather new to the cake decorating hobby. I have made a few cakes. My sister is having her baby shower this weekend. I wanted to make a pregnant belly cake.l I saw so many beautiful ones on this site. I beleive its made out of a 1/2 of a ball pan and cupcakes for the boobs. I think that its covered in fondant. Any ideas on how to do this or any tips. Looks pretty easy but im sure that it is not.

Thanks for the help in advance icon_biggrin.gif

Dont forget to add the bellybutton! hehe

Your right on the sports ball pan and cupcakes.

Browze through the baby shower cakes in the galleries and theyre are several different versions of the cake.

Im sure yours will be great! Dont forget to post!

If you don't mind my asking people's opinions on your post, what is the appeal of this type of cake? ... compared to adorable teddy bears, bottles, rattles and pins, moons and hearts, carriages, basinettes and all the old fashioned baby shower pink blue yellow and green?

it's cute!

it's fun!

it's a modern, new, different take

the traditional ones are just that -- traditional, not out of the box. And some would say--so played out.

at the moment, my fav is the little yellow ducky...but even that will get played out from overuse as will the belly cakes too

as w/ all things, fads come, fads go --- and some (bellbottoms! tie-dye) come back to haunt us!!!!

Yeppers Vienneaus:

I had this discussion on another thread yesterday and just recently at work for a requested baby shower cake and all I had to say is: "Then you take the knife and cut that cake......" Everyone opted for another style icon_lol.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

Sorry Doug.......even if it is the latest fad, ya won't see me make something so barbaric - at least not this style......... icon_twisted.gif

What Doug said.

Also, I think some of the appeal is that the cake is focused on the Mom ... the beauty of the pregnant woman's body ... an acknowledgement of what she (and her body) have gone through in order to get this new little blessing into the world.

Our eldest daughter is a photographer -- many young pregnant women today LOVE to have naked-belly photo sessions. They are very proud of that profile, and with good reason icon_wink.gif

So I think it follows that they'd love to have a cake at their baby shower that echoes that pride.

I agree -- who on earth would want to slice open that belly? gross! Just like 3D cakes made to look like a sleeping baby -- who gets the job of cutting off it's head and serving on a plate?

no one said you HAVE to eat the belly...most are on top of a sheet cake.

could just remove and save as a keepsake too.
