I took this cake decorating class at my local college. (I'm still very inexperienced). The first half of the day was basic stars, borders, etc...the second half was a tiered fondant cake. I'd worked with fondant once, and it turned out really decent (except for taste cause it was Wilton). I paid $100.00 for the two classes. During the second class, I find out that the teacher has never worked with fondant before..but we have to do the cake (put the fondant on) the way she wants us to. She had me so confused..I couldnt do anything decent with my cake after I screwed it up with her directions.....This horribly ugly cake is what came of it. I gave up on the dots on the bottom..as they continued to fall off the cake.....I got a good laugh out of it..and Lesson is learned.
Oh dear, poor you going to a course where they weren't very helpful. How could she be teaching something she'd never done?
On the plus side you've got the colours right - I find choosing colours really hard so well done for that and the tiers are straight - keep on icing!

Make the local college aware that she was inexperienced in this area. If they want to offer a course like this with these features they need to offer a qualified instructor.
Just my 2 cents ![]()
Keep practicing. We all have to start somewhere.
This is not the worst I've seen. At least this does not look like
"pan cake" with icing, w/c I think is the worst of all, esp. if it's left in the aluminum pan. Good job for being so brave in making this cake, inspite that your instructor was so clueless. ![]()
Can you get some of your money back? I sure would try.
(not that the cake is that bad for a beginner fondant cake, but if the teacher can't tell you how to make fondant decorations stick......)
Just so you know, brush on a little water or clear vanilla to stick the decorations.
Are those dowels poking up in the fondant on the top layer? What's up? ![]()

They won't give me money back. And yes they're dowel rods. She brought scissors to cut the dowels with..and wood was FLYING..literally.
Thanks for the nice comments. I've done some better cakes since then (b/c only)..but it was good for a laugh and I was hoping you all would get a nice smile out of it too. Have a great night.
she just told us we needed them. Do what your teacher says, right? lol
Weird. Sounds like she doesn't know anything about tiered cakes either.
Your cake is very cute! When I took the Wilton courses at our local CC my instructor did not use fondant so she didn't teach it. She had 18 years experience as a Wilton instructor but she hated fondant and refused to use it. She was very honest about it though and recomended some other places in town to go and get instructions on using it. I would have been livid if I'd paid that much for a decorating class and they had some inexperienced armature teaching it.
I also would complain to the college. They need an experienced instuctor to teach fondant. It is much more complicated than buttercream. Also, learning all the tricks to buttercream and being experienced in buttercream, gives you more confidence to start in fondant. How did she attach the dots? It also looks as if you didn't cut the fondant around the bottom of each layer. She definitely did not know what she was doing. I would find another teacher. You have talent and will do good.
