I originally posted this in cake disasters but I think I had it in the wrong place since no one answered. I cannot get my crumb coat to stick to the cake. I don't know if this is because of "new crisco" but I have been having trouble getting the crumb coat to stick to the cake. I can literally peel it off of the cake and the cake is clean underneath. Even waiting for it to crust up a bit, and put another layer on, the crumb coat sticks to the spatula and peels off of the cake. Then I get crumbs in the topcoat. What am I doing wrong?

sounds like the new crisco is the culprit! Someone posted a recipe yesterday (I think) for a buttercream that uses the new crisco that doesn't fall off the cake. I'm sorry, I can't find it and I can't remember the 'magic' ingredient...but I think she said it was similar to Wilton's high humidity recipe.
Sorry I can't help more! I still have all the horrible transfat in my store brand shortening icon_smile.gif

That also happens to me on occasion when the outside of the cake is moist....could be due to extremely moist cake and/or from being wrapped in saran wrap when still slightly warm....all the condensation then sticks to the cake causing the outside to be a little sticky or moist feeling.

Solution......put your icing on thick and only run your blade one direction. Moving it back and forth and then lifting it off pulls the icing off. I did use the new recipe for high humidity that someone posted the other day and didn't have any problems today. It uses cornstarch instead of merigue powder.
