Okay so the bride is my best friends daughter. The cake is my gift to her. She wanted to make it easy on me so she picked a cake that has fondant medallions that you can make in advance. But. . . she doesn't want it to be fondant. She wants buttercream, no filling. So the cakes are baked, perfectly level, doweled ready to go to the church to finish. 18, 14, 12, 8, 4. It takes a good while to get it finished. But with the help of my DD it is done. We decide to reward ourselves and take about an hour to do some light shopping. When we get back. . . . you guessed it. The leaning tower of Pisa. Someone working at the church got cold so they warmed up the room. Medallions are falling off, icing is melting ![]()
Now it is about time for the rehearsal and there is a CROWD of people giving me advice about what to do while I am working frantically to fix the cake. The wedding is today at 3. I can't get back in this morning until 9:30 to survey the damage. Here is the picture I took before we left. . . .
Wow, what intricate detail work! It's beautiful!
you know, there's always one in a crowd, isn't there? It's June in Arkansas so NATURALLY we need to turn the heat on! Heaven forbid someone just put on a sweater if just ONE person is a little chilly. But NO-O-O-O-O-O! The temp has be adjusted just for YOU with no regard for anyone's else comfort, let alone an expensive wedding cake!
Idiots!
I know how you feel. Years ago I had a disaster, my Mom's next door neighbor's dtr's cake. The restruant hadn't run the sweeper yet, I aways delivered wedding cake early in the day (less traffic and cooler). My mom came as a helper, I told her when we left, I don't like this, "I hope they don't hit the leg of the table or get close to the cake table. Guess what!! After the ceremony at the church I head straight to the restruant I can't see the cake from the door way. Cake is on the floor. We had a local bakery bring some cakes and fix it for the pictures. We still are friends. Only time I had this happen. Live and learn.
Well for better or for worse it is over. I turned the air as cold as it could go about 9:30 this morning. So I had the reception hall chilled out nicely. When we got 300 packed into the hall though it was climbing up toward 90 degrees in there. I was sure the cake was going to have a complete meltdown before they took the pictures with the cake. But we did survive it. My daughter was a bridesmaid, she says she is going to elope there is too much stress in a wedding ![]()
indydebi I know what you mean about people!
tashaluna that is the heavy cake topper. I hot glued plastic dowels to the bottom of it to help secure it. Well the cake stayed together for the reception. I expected to see it in the floor when we got back there for the reception. What a stressful weekend!!!
