Yes..It is unseasonally hot here as well.I get very grouchy in the heat so I find it hard to get motivated etc...It has been hot everywhere around the world this year....Europe is getting it also!
PennySue,
Where in SoCal are you? I'm in Ventura County - work on the beach at Point Mugu - and this weather is really something. Totally unlike any other summer I can remember, complete with the wacky lightening storms and wierd rain. I cannot remember ever having that and I've lived here all my life (40yrs).
The weather is impacting my baking. For my sugar cookies, it's good because my fondant sticks better. I just make sure they stay in a cool place. Don't want it melting and falling off.
My buttercream is definately not liking this weather. I was thinking of making a cake for my nephews bday tomorrow. Have decided against it. I too have central air, but even with that I don't trust the weather. I think I'm going to go buy him an ice cream cake instead. Pefect for this weather.
I'm in the San Fernando Valley. With the Verdugo's on one side and the Santa Monica's on the other, it's like sitting in a steamy trough. I can remember some hot summers but we left our aircon on night before last and that's a first.
My in-laws live in Ventura, not too far from the coast and they get that evening breeze but even that isn't helping.
My daughter lives in Colorado Springs and the other night they went out to dinner for their 2nd anniversary. When they went into the resturant it was 92, when they came out, it was 63 and hailing. Talk about strange weather!
well here in texas where i am this is normal. temps in the hundreds and humidity so thick you need a knife to get out the door. its always pretty warm here so as far as my cakes i haven't done any that need to be transferred more than 5 minutes or so because i know any others just wont make it.
so if anything just because its summer i have to be more careful about how long a cake will need to travel.
Yep, I'm making mmf wedding bells and border trims for the wedding cake that I have coming up this Saturday and am having a time with the fondant ![]()
I did a gameboy cake covered with mmf and the whole time I just wanted to cry...had to reroll twice and couldn't get all the little lumps of sugar to disappear and I sifted it really well.
This is the first time that I have ever had problems from the heat when doing cakes.
Good luck everyone and keep cool ![]()

We've been having the wacky lightening storms and weird rain as well, and I'm in Indiana! And yes, my icing is suffering too, the last cake I made the icing was melting as soon as I put it in the container, and that was right after I had made it!! The thing is, I have to make 3 cakes two for aug 5 and one for the 8th. The 2 on the fifth, one will be buttercream and the other 2 will have to be mmf. I guess I can just bake the cake and bring my icings with me for the buttercream one. All 3 of these cakes are going on a 160 mile trip. My friend and I share a birthday so as a surprise to him I am making us a cake.
Our "heat wave" in North Dakota is the lower 90's so it's not bothering anything I'm doing since I have air conditioning. We haven't had more than a sprinkle of rain in over a month and I haven't had to mow my yard since before the 4th of July.
I'm enjoying the heat since most of the time it's too cold, everyone else is complaining.
