Next weekend we are having a family get together at a lake. However we will be celebrating 3 different birthdays. I had thought we were going to do 1 & I had no problem coming up with an idea, but then I learned we are having 3 people w/ a birthday celebration. So, I'm at a loss for ideas. There is a 1 yr old boy, 32 yr old sister-in-law & 55 yr old father-in-law. So, how can I make a birthday cake for all? I had thought of making a smaller cake for the baby & then one for my SIL & FIL together, but what????? I'm about to go insane trying to think.

What about three different sets of cupcakes? parents usually like to have their children "get messy" so..that would solve all the problems, and you can make each set decorated for the different occasions, and different flavors. Say....White with white icing for the 1 year old..in either a favorite character...or blocks. 3-tiered..mini cakes (wilon has the pan) or regular cupcakes with flowers in Strawberry cake with white icing for the SIL..and chocolate cupcakes with white icing with a fishing/golfing/bbqing/or tool theme for the FIL?

If it has to be a cake...I would make a small 9" cake for teh baby...and leave the bigger cake for the SIL/FIL more simple with presents..or stars.

The only thing is I've never stacked a cake before & don't know where to begin. Is it pretty easy? And how would I transfer the cakes? The lake is about 1 hour away.

I would transport separately and assemble there. Each "package" could have different "wrapping paper" to match its person. There are tutorials on here for stacking

lake = fishing.

so small (no bigger than 4"x6") fish smash cake for the one year old.

bigger cake: lake scene: water, trees, cabin, dock, two people in boat (him/her)

pretzel rod trees (grouping on right could be replaced by "boulders" w/ water cascading down.

water flows off cake on left onto cake board under the fish smash cake (the one that got away!)

(of course, change design to be more in line w/ acutal lake and surroundings you'll be at)

sign by lake: Compliment Lake

"Still fiishin' for complements at your age?"

"Sorry, lake's fished out!"

Happy B-day!

Wow Doug! I don't have much time to post right now but may pm you later or you could post on here about how to make some of the "stand up" things. I'm still new at decorating but am always willing to try new things.

A friend of mine had a family get together and I suggested to make a cake with a family tree on it, it was not easy to put all names on the cake, but all were happy. Maybe u could do something similar.

see this project at Wilton for one way to do the trees

http://www.wilton.com/recipes/recipesandprojects/Xmas/rusticretreat.cfm

here's a different technique for trees, also from wilton.

they used pretzel sticks, but for this cake you could use pretzel rods.

I once had to do one for four people of different ages and genders. I decided to go with the Simpsons characters ... one character for each person. You might also come up with a certain family or group of recognizable characters to represent your people ... in your case maybe BamBam, Wilma, and Mr. Slate!
