How Do I Get Chocolate Round The Sides?

Hello all, im very new here and to cake baking and decorating, i love baking but im not so very good at it, YET! anyway, i was wondering, how do you get chocolate, chocolate hail, sprinkles etc around the sides of a cake? you know, so that the whole outside of the cake is covered? I have tried throwing it on, and all i get is one great big mess! can some body help me, please? icon_smile.gif

first, frost the cake, then tilt the cake (CAREFULLY!!) and pat on the chocolate sprinkles with the palm of your hand. keep turning and patting on until it's all done.

Do NOT let your icing crust first or else they won't stick. If your icing has crusted, thinly spread a little piping gel on it (very thinly) and immediately pat the sprinkles on as lasidus1 suggested above.

You have to overfill your hand otherwise you'll end up with frosting all over your hands. Most of it will end up off of the cake, so you'll use more than you need for the cake to do this. Just keep picking it up and patting.

Good point rezzycakes. I have to cover cakes with shavings and crunch stuff everyday, so it's second nature for me....

Also, make sure you have a nice, big platter or bowl underneath to catch the excess.
