Just wondering if anyone has any tips for making buttercream roses, I am self taught and I am doing pretty well at making them except sometimes the bc isn't stiff enough. I know alot of time when I read through the posts I pick up some good decorating tips. So feel free to give me any suggestions. Thanks.

I personally just cannot get my roses to look very good on a nail, I use a skewer.

I've read alot of people use hershey kisses so they have a good base, but I've never tried it.

Good Luck

My number one tip is to make sure your #104 decorating tip is good - it should not be too tight at the narrow end or edges will come out badly cracked. I got this tip from a wonderful CCer and it has helped tremendously!!! Oh yeah, and practice, practice, practice!!!! icon_biggrin.gif

a good base and a stiff bc goes a long way to making them right. i've also found if i go too slow, they don't look as good, i have to make my movements a little fast, but that came with lots of practice.it takes practice to coordinate the turning of the nail, the up down motion, etc. so just practice and pawn off the roses on kids, hubby etc. icon_biggrin.gif

I can't swear by this, but I read here on CC that using a chocolate Kiss as a base works really well. Think I may have to try it! (Or eat the kisses I bought yesterday!)

Consistency of icing makes a big difference to me. If it is too soft, they start sagging and listing off to one side as I make them. I think my tips are too narrow because I get the ragged edges... after reading posts I think I'm going to buy a new one to see if that helps.

My Wilton I instructor also said that Hershey Kisses make great bases but I have never tried. She also made roses out of peanut butter (on a chocolate cake) - interesting idea but I didn't like the color.

The kisses work great! I did my 78 roses that I did 2 weeks ago all with kisses as the base. I used to make okay bases but I don't know what happened icon_redface.gifthumbsdown.gificon_confused.gif I will use them from now on.

Smashcakes is right, you just need practice and to keep up with adjusting your icing to get it right. Some people can do them fast and others, slower. Wilton has a video on their site for each step.

Whenever my icing is too stiff, I get ragged edges. It takes a lot of practice and sometimes it still isn't perfect. Humidity is one of my enemies, I live in Missouri. I haven't used the hershey kisses but after reading about all of your results, I am going to try!!
