My mom asked me to make a cake for my sisters Birthday/Graduation/Housewarming party. Aside from the fact that it is two weeks before my son's 1st birthday party and I am trying to get that taken care of (expecting 60-85 people) with no help from DH, now I am making this cake. She says she wants to pay me for it, and I have no idea what price to give her. It is going to be a 10 or 12" round with a layer of chocolate ganache and a layer of triple berry filling iced with rolled buttercream. I also found 2 martini glasses that match the color and theme of her new apartment. I have no idea what to charge her for it. I am afraid if I ask to much she is going to laugh at me.

This is the hard part. My sister is graduating beauty school. Whenever she does mine, dh's or anyone in our family's hair she expects to get paid. Usually 20 bucks for a cut and like 40ish for color and cut. THis is cheap compared to a salon but still alot to charge family. So since she doesn't feel bad about charging us that much for her trade, should I feel bad about charging for mine? What seems a fair price?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

To be on the safe side -- to keep the family peace -- give her the same discount that she gives for hair cuts, coloring, etc., if you're comfortable with that.

I'm not sure what the same discount would be though because I am not sure what I would/should charge to the average person. I am new at this.

but in this case she is making the cake at her mom's request, not at the sister's request. I think I read that right.

Personally I wouldn't charge my mom for anything - but if she wants to pay, charge her for the ingredients.

I would charge for cost of supplies, plus $20-40 extra. She is charging YOU $20 for labor alone...

or....

since it's a triple threat party...the cake (OH BOY could we have fun w/ that -- hair curlers, scissors, ---oooohhhhh...it looks like a woman getting a facial?!?) along w/ the glasses could be:

your triple threat GIFT to your sister (and if mom insists, she can pay for a really fancy cake support!

unlike hair cuts, dye jobs, etc. which are recurring events and therefore really not it the "gift" category (hey, most even give child an allowance for doing chorse!...so, yes, to be expected to pay relative to do a repetitive task, esp. one you normally pay someone else to do. even if you don't pay in $, can be barter -- you do my hair, I mow your yard)

this is a special one-time event that normally has gifts attached/expected.

cake + glasse = your gift

How about you and mom go shopping for supplies and she can pay for those and take you out to lunch at the same time, then do cake as gift for sister/mom? You and mom get to spend time together, you get to help mom out and sister gets cake. icon_biggrin.gif

Thanks guys!!! Okay, I told my mom about 25 to 30 for the cake and 10 more for a platter of chocolate covered strawberries(I got a great deal on supplies them for my son's bday and they are in the freezer right now). So I will get a decent amount I think for the cake and a little extra for the strawberries. I did a test run of my son's cake last night so tonight after dinner at my parents they got to sample some of his cake and I think she felt a little better about paying more for the cake after trying what I could do. She usually buys a 10 dollar cake from Sara Lee outlet so getting her to pay that much is impresive.

Doug- Don't feel bad. I should have seen it 3 times by now!!!! My best friend got me tickets for it last year for my birthday, but I was 8 months pregnant when the tickets were for and I was on bed rest(really bad pregnancy) and couldn't go, so my DH GOT TO GO!!!!! I have seen it 2 times though and definately plan to go again. One perk of living in Chicago. Cost of living however is the downfall. I guess it evens out!!!

Thanks again!!!
