I know, I know, this topic has been talked about to death, but I have to clear my mind.

I just had a customer pick up a 9x13 cake she ordered for her husband. She wanted "just a cake". I had posted about how I would make a plain cake for an adult male. Anyway, I decided on putting racing checkers on the cake, and just writing Happy Birthday. (picture in my photos) He races cars as a hobby. Anyway, she also ordered 2 cakes for her son's birthday on Tuesday. I am making elmo...from the elmo face pan, and cookie monster (from the same pan).

So...she picks up the one cake today, and asks how much she owes me for all three cakes. I told her $50. She was fine with that, but I feel so guilty. I just feel like that's too much. My husband says it's not, and when I think about it, I said I wouldn't do a cake for less than $20, so with 3 cakes, I gave her a deal. (I told her that). Like I said, she was fine with it, but for some reason I feel bad about it. What do you guys think?

you WAY WAY WAY undersold yourself!

base is costs x 3

that's WallyMart prices you gave her!!!

More like $30 each cake!!! is what you should charge (esp. for elmo and cookie monster!!)

if anything, feel guilty about selling yourself short!!!!

you ARE WORTH MORE!!!!!!!

I understand how you feel ~ and it is hard to get over that feeling! In my case, I really enjoy the decorating, and to me it is not like I am working when I am doing a cake for someone to purchase.....(because it is not like I it is something that was work for me)

It does get easier with time. And I am still amazed at the people who will pay top dollar for something that I enjoy doing! thumbs_up.gif

(edited to say - yes, you need to charge more!)

My god girl. You need to learn to charge what your worth. And $50.00 for 3 cakes is way too low. I charge $30.00 for a 9x13 with basic decorations.
I looked at your pics and you do beautiful work.

I charge $50 for a 1/4 sheet with basic decoration(borders, writing). never feel guilty.

pricing IS hard. but half of the time people are happy to get it for even more than what you are asking.

I'm doing the gumpaste flowers for a friend who is making her daughter's wedding cake. I cut her a deal b/c she is a frend, but I'm still thought twice about charging her $150 for the gumpaste flowers (20 total, plus leaves). Then I remember how much time these things can take.

your time is valuable!
