I use a craft knife, the kind you see carpenter's use (retractable blade)
> mark dowel where you want it cut.
> lay on flat surface
> press blade in at mark
> apply pressure as you roll the dowel across the surface back & forth -- be sure to go all the way around the dowel
> will cut through very quickly and cleanly.
------------
others use:
> part of a hacksaw blade
> coping saw
> dremel type tool w/ cut off blade (WEAR safety goggles!)
I guess I'm lucky. I have an actual bandsaw in the garage ![]()
Rose clippers from Target ($9.99) cut through dowel rods like butter.
Since we're talking about dowels, I'm curious to know if anyone else has ever had the problem of their cake picking up the taste from the dowels.
I made a cake not too long ago and supported it with the rods. It happened to fall over anyway and so I took a few nibbles before I threw it away.
But when I did, I noticed that the cake that was touching the dowels actually tasted like WOOD.. ![]()
It was NOT a flavor I wanted in my cake, and after I tasted it I'm glad it had fallen over and I wasn't able to give it away!!
Anyone else ever had this problem??
