What Consistency Do You Use For The Base Icing?

Just curious if you can get the same results no matter what the consistency of the icing is. Should the crumb coat be a different consistency?

It should be of a thin consistency.

For my icing that I use to ice the cake & to crumb coat I use thin consistancy.

I think I read somewhere that someone used a stiff consistency so they could get really nice crisp edges. Does anyone use this technique? I would think it would be hard to spread...
