Need Someone To Talk Me Into Doing Chocolate Transfers Again

First of all I am a new fan of FBCT's, I keep hearing raves about chocolate transfers and that they are easier. Is it really?? I just did my first one, and I just didn't have that much fun doing it. I made a huge mess, and it seemed time consuming. I bought the wilton candy colors and I had to use half the bottle to get just a tiny bit of black even though I did you dark candy melts. The colors really seemed to change the flavor (though I dont really care about that too much) I just ordered the americolors and the flow coat, will that make it easier to color the chocolate? Also i admit I didnt have parchment triangles so I will have much more of a mess to clean. My first one turned out OKAY, but I thought of doing several on a my son's first birthday cake..and I am just not sure this is the method I want to use. Overall I am just a little disappointed that it wasnt more fun, will it get better with some practice and the right tools?
I have only done a couple of fbcts and a couple of chocolate transfers. I thought the choc transfer was a little easier, but mainly because I didn't have to take it in and out of the freezer and wait for it to get hard. On one of my cakes the choc transfer covers just about the whole top of the cake. It would have probably been better to do that as a fbct, but I thought the choc. transfer came out nice and smooth. My fbcts weren't as smooth as I would have liked. I will probably do both again in the future and which one I do will depend on the look I need.
I love choc. transfers and you will see several examples in my photos! I like FBCT too! I mainly use choc. transfers if I want the image to stand up. I like to stand them in cupcakes or on the sides of cakes.
I color them with my Americolors. I have had SEVERAL people tell me not to do this--however I find if I add crisco to my candy melts first I can get away with it. All of the Candy melts in my photos were pre-colored or colored this way. I want to try the flo-coat too, but haven't had the chance yet.
I have also found that once melted and put into bags- I can lay the bags on a heating pad on low setting and they will stay melted--no need to re-heat.
PRICE: I looked at your photos and your CT's are so great! The maxine one is hilarious by the way. I guess I dont know if it is my inexperience that made this disappointing to me, or the mess. If you have any tip on making it easier that would be great!!

So how much crisco do you use? I guess it must work if you dont have any problems with it. So do you use disposable bags, parchment? I havent had good luck with parchment triangles, but it seems like it would be less wasteful for just a little bit of chocolate.
I really want to like this as I have seen so many great photos and people are talking about how great they are. I guess I might just need more practice.
I am usually working with small amounts at a time-baby food jars.
I will melt the candy melts in a large baby food jar, then add 1/2 teaspoon crisco and mix it in well then add a drop or two of Americolors. If it starts to seize up add more crisco.
Oh that's a good idea, thanks. i have lots of baby food jars around here.
Merissa,
I know alot of people like to buy the already colored candy melts as a starting point, but I use the white, peanut butter and dark chocolate. I melt a large amount of the white disks in a large glass mixing bowl in the microwave. I then put smaller amounts of the melted candy melts into custard cups and make them whatever colors I am going to need. I keep the custard cups sitting on a warming tray on the very lowest setting to keep the candy melted and ready to go when I need it. I use either disposable bags or sometimes sandwich bags with the corner snipped off. I have lids for the custard cups, so I can just store any candy thats left over in the cups for future use. I hope this helps you. I find as I get more experience and more practice I find ways to make things easier for myself. Good luck!
That is a good idea too, thanks! Okay, I guess I have been talked into trying it again (which is just what I needed) My first didnt turn out too badly, but it just seemed overwhelming.
