I am curently in the process of maybe replacing my mixer but I really need a course on mixer, I once use a KA that I thought was too small I could barely stick my spatula in the bowl to scrape the sides and I see Ina Garten ( From the show Barefoot Contessa)struggling with it too, so now I am very confused I went to their wesite and they all sound a lot better than my little Sunbeam, but needs to be replaced, I am attached to it and I have been using it so much I've had for almost 3 years and would like to keep it for my own home baking and in the future take the KA to my place of business, so it will have withstand making fondant and all heavy duty mixing.

Thanks

I have the 6qt. Epicurean and I just love it! I have never made fondant, however it does a great job on big batches of bread dough and double or triple batches of icing are a breeze. I don't think they make the epicurean anymore, but I know they have a 6 qt. Hobart also makes a home/ countertop mixer and they are equal to KA. My dad works for Hobart and Hobart used to own KA, so the styles are quite similar.
Good luck with the mixer hunt!

The way the bowl sits makes it a little harder to scrape the bowl, the top sits directly over the bowl so there isn't as much scraping room. There are benifits to this however, the beater is what moves, not the bowl and it does a better job of mixing, you don't need to scrape the bowl as often.

When buying one of theirs consider your budget first, they also have a compare thing on their website. The bigger the bowl the more room you will have for mixing. The tilt heads can't handle the same amount of stuff as the bowl lifts, my husband tells me it's because the tilt heads have a little give even when latched so they CAN'T make them as strong as the bowl lift. Some people don't like the bowl lift and others prefer it, I've had both and I like the bowl lift. Some of the more expensive mixers have metal gears, the rest don't, the compare thing will show that.

I had a 4.5 quart for about 7 years and a few months ago got the 600 because the little one was starting to quit on me. My husband bought me the first because he figured it would save money in the end, I had burned up a Sunbeam in under a year.

Go on kitchenaid.com
They have a factory outlet thing on their site and a lot of times the mixers are on really good clearance prices.
I personally prefer the tilt head, I think it's more convenient and roomy. The bowl lift are what we use in professional kitchens, so it's true what mbelgard said.
The Hobart is also what we use in the professional kitchens for 20qt, 60qt, etc....so that's a good choice too.
(but I love kitchen aid)
Oh, I have a 5qt, but if you can get a 6qt...all the better

It was about a $50 one so it wasn't the best they make. Christmas baking did it in, it had been used heavily anyway then I made my husband's favorite cookies and it died.
