I've seen a couple pics in the gallery titled "smash cake"? What is this exactly? I have my theory as to what this may be but thought I'd ask first. icon_biggrin.gif

It's a small (usually 6") cake, made for the birthday boy or girl to smash and play with. Makes for cute pictures icon_smile.gif

on his/her 1st birthday --a small cake just for the baby to eat -- but let's be real...SMASH as they try to eat it with their hands (and feet sometimes too!)

such a fun mess

I have to tell you there was no smashing when my little man got his smash cake-he at the whole thing!! It was just a small #1 decorated to match his big cake but I couldn't believe he ate the whole thing! too funny! I would probably go even smaller than a 6in, probably 4in but that's just me!

LOL! Okay.. I was waaaaaayyy off on this. Glad I asked. I thought maybe a "smash" cake was a cake made out of the trimmings of the big cake and you "smashed" the trimmings in some kind of a mold. LOL.. I think I am going to attempt this with my leftover cake parts. (from the trimming) I mean what else will be done with them other than eating them?? icon_biggrin.gif My creative juices are flowing. icon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gif

Now.. having said that... Any clue how to hold it together? LOL! Hmmm..

the answer you seek is called: cake balls !!

It makes for a great photo opportunity IF the child smashes the cake. I made a standup Winnie the Pooh (my 1st ever decorated cake) as my son's smash cake. He wanted NOTHING to do with it. He wouldn't touch it, he wouldn't eat it. I guess he didn't want to ruin his mommy's masterpiece!

On the topic - would it be okay to give a smash cake for a 3rd bday along with the cake? Or is it not done?

I have made smash cakes for all age groups. Usually little girls want their own. You can also put a cake on another cake- ie a cupcake castle on a 9x13 and remove that for a individual cake

As a mother, I can totally tell you that I wish they had smash cakes for up to at least age 5! My 2 year old is even more messy now than she was at 1! Plus it keeps their fingers out of my pretty big cake.
