I know most of you use the run of the mill tools for decorating a cake but has anyone discovered any unique tools that aren't made for cake decorating that have worked for them. I'm just curious. I really wish I could contribute to this but I am still starting out and thought it might be fun to hear what some people use to decorate their cakes with.

I use a bowl scraper to smooth the icing on my cakes. That's pretty much the only thing I use that's not being used as expected.

I've read about people using PVC pipes from Home Depot as rolling pins for fondant, tracing wheel for sewing for doing stitch marks on fondant/gumpaste, clay gun for arts and crafts to extrude fondant/gumpaste in different shapes and foam paint rollers to smooth buttercream icing.

I am constantly looking throught the scrapbooking section of the craft store for things. The paper embossers, that you thread the paper through, some of them can be taken apart and used on fondant. I have used a tool called the Chizzeler (a baby dremil type tool) for other stuff. I've also begun checking out the clay section. You never know what you're going to find.

I've used a childrens' medicine dropper and cut the tip off as a fondant string extruder.

I am not sure what this is called but my husband brought home from work these heavy duty card coard tubes that he said paper would come on or something to do with molds, he orginal brought them home for the kids to build or play with. I took them and I drape the icing bag in it. It holds the bag in place so I can fill and refill. I love it. - I hope that made sense.

Also about 6 months someone on here found dusts that go into making lip gloss that michaels was phasing out. The manufacturer said they were food safe and I went to my michaels and grabbed them all up. two tubes in a package for $1 - silver and red.

I have some Sculpey push molds that make beautiful designs....also, my best tool is a ratcheting pvc cutter from Home Depot. It cuts dowels like butter!!!!

Speaking of cutting like butter....I also use a heated craft knife to cut my cake bases out of foamcore board. It glides right through, allowing you to cut any shape or design without any jagged edges that a plain Exacto knife gives you.

I like using rubber stamps on the fondant and paper towels on buttercream. Oh, and Melvira's paint roller! icon_lol.gif

I bought a length of steele pipe with orange rubber/plastic ends. Stuck it in the dish washer and used it to roll out fondant. It long and heavy wich helps me a whole lot. I am very short and have trouble rolling out large sections of fondant.
