Can You Make A 3-D Number 1 Cake Standing Upright?

Can you make a 3-D number 1 cake that is standing upright, not laying down on a board? When I look at the number '1' it has the little part that hangs from the side (kind of like a flag). I have a potential customer asking if this is possible. I can't envision making a 3-D number 1 entirely out of cake and feeding 20 - 30 people.

Any ideas?

If you want to make that little part that sticks out, I'd use rice krispies or even styrofoam just to get it light and stick to the main cake.

how's this.

red line = cake board

dotted line = division between layers

blue line = dowel all the way through (support dowels between tiers NOT shown)

-----

so, it's just a bunch of tiers stack w/ top tier a bit wider w/ an overhang and little bit of carving -- for that tier's board I'd use foamcore.

----

as to size of tiers --- I envision only 4x4 inches....so it's not all that much cake -- but seems like it --- just artfully stacked.

roughly three 8x8 cakes cut up (two get cut into four 4x4 sections -- the third to make the base and the extra overhang)

Wow Doug! You are awesome. Do you think it would travel well? Would definently need some assistance to get it 20 miles away in one piece.

Was thinking all buttercream since it would be pretty darn diffcult to get Fondant to look deceit.

Doug, I could totally see that working. Do you think this would be possible in a number 3??

20 miles .... well Yurtle the Turtle could get it there....not sure a car since it si so tall and slender.

might only ice on 3 sides and transport flat, then stand up and finish the back once there (would you have the time??? or place?)

fondant would have to be pieced together and then the edges polished to hide the seam ---

(hmmm...thinking about a 3....hmmmm)

Doug,

I was looking at your construction diagram again. I was thinking I would need some dowels in the inside of the cake to support the weight of each tier above it. Maybe this is way too much, but maybe 4 rods in each 4x4 cake in between the long outer rods.

Am I over thinking it?

actually no, you're "spot on" as our friends across the pond like to say.
(and I did mention that those weren't drawn in .... too many lines!!!)

four in each tier, one near each corner should do it.

see...you're getting the hang of this dowel business!! thumbs_up.gif

after playing around w/ designs a bit...

a 3 would be nearly impossible w/ out doing some kind of metal or pvc type internal support due to the big overhang of the top of the 3 and those two big semi-circular indented areas.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I am not nearly advanced enough to come up with that kind of support. I could always do it laying down though. Just wishful thinking! Thanks for trying!

Could you do the #1 with a #1 pan, 1 stacked then cut in the right spots to make the diagram Doug showed?

I didn't know there was a #1 pan. Will have to search to find the pan.

Mmgiles,

I just found the pan instructions on wilton.com. I looked in the wilton online store and I didn't find it for sale.

I am no Doug. And not an Engineer, I'm sure this defies gravity but what about a straight number 3. But you will probably need multiple trusses to support the weight of the middle and top part of the 3.

I wasnt asking for myself. I got the impression the original poster had the pan. Maybe my imagination. I was just thinking if she already had the pan it would be easier for her than the carving.

mmgiles,

I am the original poster. I don't have the pan, I was wondering if you could make a 3-D carved number 1 cake to stand up.

But I appreciate the idea.
