What Do You Think This Border Is Made Of?

I love the cakes on this website. What do you think the border is made of? Is it fondant with an impression or maybe a mold that they used. Do you think they used royal icing for the detail on the cake board? Did they use an impression mat? Do you know where I can get one that makes that? I don't have enough experience to just look at something a tell.

Also, does anyone know much about covering cake board in fondant and how to get it so smooth. I usually use cake drums and I am trying to conserve them so I usually cover them with foil first but it usually comes thru on my fondant. How can I get it smooth? Should it be thicker?

Thanks for any help

hmm, I'm pretty sure it's fondant. on the cake board it's prob. embossed fondant. Maybe someone else will be sure, but anyway here's a bump!!

Looks like embossed fondant on the cake board. The little bitty dropstrings look like maybe royal icing. Not sure which you are asking about.

Thanks, I thought it might have been royal icing for the detail work on the cake board. I would like to know how they did the border around the bottom of the cake still.

Their cakes are so sweet!

The border looks like it might be fondant rolled out till it is a long rope then crimped using one of the crimper designs. HTH

Bet if you clicked on "CONTACT" tab and sent them an e-mail, they'd tell you what it is!

I agree with tw1nkle. If you look on the next cake, it shows a closer view. One even looks like the same effect you get with the handle end of an eating utensil.

The impression rollers are available at lots of places. One site that has oodles of fondant "stuff" is
http://sugarcraft.com/

click on gumpaste/fondant...tools....then on rolling pins (textured)
