Thank you so much TooMuchCake for the inspiration and help with this cake.
I made this for my best friend's birthday. I have been dying for a reason to try a horse head cake. It is iced and decorated in buttercream. The photo doesn't show all the detail it has, but it is complete with muscle buldges in the neck and detail in the face at the jaw area.
Didn't turn out exactly like I hoped. Do they ever?!?! ![]()
That is awesome looking. How long did it take you to complete it? I am very impressed.
WOW! I love it. How long did it take you to complete?

I baked the cake last night and let it cool. I've been working on it on and off for the past 7 hours so it's hard to say how long it would have taken me if I were working on it straight. I work from home so I'd get up from work and do a little bit to it here and there ![]()
Thanks so much for all of the nice compliments!
imartsy, no it's not airbrushed. Done all in light and dark grey buttercream. This isn't a cake pan. I printed out a clip art image of a horse's head, cut out only the main head part and a portion of the neck out of a 9X13 cake, used the scraps to add on the ears, neck and the small details like the muscles, etc. Built up the small veins, nostril with buttercream, the rest like around the eye and the muscle detail are small carved pieces of cake I added on after doing a light crumb coat on the cake.
Hooray!!!! You did a great job!! ![]()

I just love it, and I'm sure your friend was thrilled with it. You should do a lot more of these! Thank you for making sure I got to see the picture.![]()
