Hi. I need a little help with a baptism cake. They want it to look like the invitation:

http://www.polkadotdesign.com/catalog/Paper_Prince/PP-PP01661#cpo

It is 9x13 with the scalloped edges and the cross. It will only say "the baptism of ____".

My plan is to make the scalloped edge in fondant (I bought a scallop cutter from FMM) and the cross in blue & white fondant. The lettering is to be in the same blue in BC.

I think this will be awfully plain. But hey, it's what they want right?

Would you do something to the sides to dress it up? I have a diamond mat or dot mat. Or maybe little crosses in BC?

I'm at a loss for ideas w/ this one.

what about using a cross cake pan and maybe using fondant balls to create the scalloping? that way it will have a 3d effect. yoiu could possibly even set that on a sheet cake so it will feed more people.
just my thoughts...good luck!

I had one to do almost like that. She just wanted it plain. Sometimes just plain is better.I always like to put a few flowers or something. I like the idea of the little crosses on the side though.

I think that the diamond mat done in blue would be very nice for the sides of the cake. Not overly decorative but would give a finished effect to the sides and add a little more color.

look at my cross cake I think that would be really good, but instead of the shell border I would do a ruffle to match the invit.

A 9X13 is a small enough cake that you can pull off not having a lot of detail. It sounds like they want the simplicity of just the cross, words and scalloped edges. If you try to do anything colorful on the sides, it may take away from the affect they want. I think this cake will be very pretty as you have described. Just make sure the cross and words are proportionate to the size of the cake. Very simple and beautiful, I think. icon_biggrin.gif

Although, if you want to do some crosses or something on the side, I would do them in the same white icing you decorated the cake with. That way it has some dimension, but it won't draw your eye away from the message.

If you are using fondant for the scallops already , why not use it for a cross. It's dresses it up a little but it is still very basic. I have the cross in my pics.

Wow - you guys are quick! icon_smile.gif I probably should've specified, but the customer wants a 9x13 and to look exactly like the invitation, so I can't use a cross pan. icon_sad.gif

I think maybe you guys are right - simpler is better. I just really don't like doing sheet cakes. And the corners, well, let's not go there! icon_wink.gif

What's the best way to do the scallops? As one piece or 4? I'm concerned it will distort when i try to put it on...

I would do exactly what they want. Instead of sprucing it up, I would just make it as perfect as possible. Some people like it simple, I know becasue I'm one of them.

My husband and I requested a very plain wedding band for him. The jeweler thought they were doing us a favor by jazzing it up, but we ended up going to another jeweler and trading the jazzed up band for a plain one. HTH
