What technique is this decorator using on top of these cakes.
It doesnt look like FBCT or royal icing.

Or I dont think they could do this by free hand.

What do you guys think?

The Giraffe, the Pony and the Bear

Can you tell in the pictures that is raised a little thicker and it looks like icing.

To me this appears to be similar to figure piping with just a bit less dimension. Maybe figure piped, and then flattened out a bit with a spatula for big areas, or soft brushes for the smaller areas. I have in the past done something similar to this. To smooth areas, I dipped camel hair paint brushes in boiling water, dab on paper towel and smooth the frosting. The heat will smooth the icing nicely.

Maybe they are done with frozen buttercream transfer.

I thought FBCT was kinda thin looking.
Completely level with the icing on the cake.

Does anyone else have an idea or a website that shows this technique?

Thanks!!!

To me the pony looks like a FBCT with the orange hair added after. I don't know about the other two.

Ok I would definately say that is just piped on and smoothed with a spatula and maybe a fine brush. but on the bears head you can see a couple of lines from spatula smoothing.

I have added 2 cakes to my gallery that I used what appears to be a similar technique. They are the hands on the Confirmation bible and the baby buggy and bear on the Baby shower cake. Again like I said in an earlier post, I just figure piped these on and smoothed with spatula for larger areas, and soft brushes on smaller areas.

I use this technique often. In my photos, I used it on the ATV cake, maybe others, I'm not sure. Anyway, I just pipe the icing on, smooth with a spatula and then finish with a VIVA papertowel.

You can do this as figure piping and then flatten with your finger diped in cornstarch.

Look at the giraffes head and mouth and the baby sitting on him, the detail is so neat and crisp. Almost perfect.

Great work.
