How Do You Disassemble A Tiered Cake?

This may seem pretty obvious but I'm stumped. How do you disassemble a tiered cake without your fingers or what not digging into the tier below?

Slide the cake cutting knife or serving utensil under the cardboard and lift one side until you can get your finger(s) under it. Keep maneuvering your fingers under the cardboard until you can get a good grip and lift it off.

But seriously, once the photos are done, no one notices or cares about your fingers messing up the border or the design, so don't really spend a lot of time stressing over it.

A large knife or spatula to lift the top tier off enough to get your hands/finger under it to lift it off completely?? There may be another way but that's how I did the few (very few) I've ever cut.
