I made the Easy MMF today for the first time and so far I like it. My question is this, do I make my decorations right before I need to decorate so they will still be soft? I did practice making some letters, but I want them to harden so they will stand up on a cake. I was thinking of simple stars or cirlces being cut out and placed on the cake after it has been frosted.
Thanks,
darkchocolate
ok, i asked the same question before and they told me that u can make decorations like roses, bows, etc. a few days before so they will harden..i had a few mmf left and i made roses for future use.
marj, how did you store your MMF decorations? How long did it take them to harden?
Right now I made a few "snake" letters, so I can stand them on a cake.
Thanks,
darkchocolate
it does not matter whether you make it now or a week or days later..
It will normally get hard by tomorrow , BUT when you are ready to work it, cut it in a couple of pieces or more , depending how much Fondant you need to work at that time and pop it in the microwave for maybe 20 seconds at level 3 (heating numbers).. if it just a small pc. of Fondant, 15 seconds is enough.
BTW, Fondant does not go bad unrefrigerated for more than a month or two. They last 'til eternity. ![]()
i made the roses in my pink cake 9 days in advance and i was so thankful i did..u will save a lot of time! the roses i made after that i let it dry in a cool dry place..away from direct sunlight, flourescent light (they will affect the color)..after they harden, probably 1-2 days, i stored them in an airtight container..
I made my first batch of the easy MMF on Sunday, and it still hasn't hardened yet. I used it to make figures of a pirate, mermaid, octopuss, crabs, cannon, and a palm tree. They are soft, but starting to crack a little bit. I thought they would harden by now.
But, it is very humid here right now, so maybe that is it or maybe I didn't do it right.
prettycake, your cakes are gorgeous! can i pm you in the future if i have any question regarding fondant?i am very new to baking and have not taken any class!
yes definitely make them a few days ahead which is great because if you have odds and ends of MMF left you can make them into roses etc and store them in an air tight container for future cakes.
edited to add.... in the container after they have dried
fourangelsmommie, how are you letting your decorations dry, out in the open or in a closed container?
Anyone,
What is the best way to let your decorations dry out?
i think open air...unless it is very hot and humid in your place..i put mine the closet
..i tried putting my one rose before it harden in an airtight container, after two weeks, it was still the same rose i put there..did not even harden a bit...i don't know why..
Open air...on a pc. of parchment, on a cooling rack, on the counter..
it will never dry in a closed container..maybe after a year. ![]()
prettycake, is it true that it is best to use an egg carton to dry flowers?
I have had the figures on a piece of waxed paper since Sunday out in the open. I thought of sticking them in the fridge, but didn't know if it would help any. Any other ideas?????
Yes, you can use an egg container as long as it is clean and no egg residue.. Or any container that would help shape and form your fondant..
I sometimes use those plastic Easter Eggs to form a Tulip. that would help
.,
oh yeah! they are perfect for tulips!
my daughter has tons of them! thanks prettycake!
Do you think it would be okay to put a piece of paper towel over the decorations to keep the dust off?
darkchocolate
i would not, but that's my IMO only..im not sure but how about parchment/wax/saran wrap...that's why i put mine in our walk-in closet..to limit dusts... ![]()
