OK this may sound SO weird to ya'll BUT... On Sunday is the 2 year anniversary of my grandpa passing away (it still feels like yesterday though). ANyway, we are going to have a bbq at my grandma's house so she's not alone. It won't be all my family only a few (I say few but like 15/20 ppl - I have a HUGE family). We haven't made final plans on food but I'm hoping I can bring a cake and I wanted something special, but at the same time not sad. kwim?
Anyway, my grandpa LOVED children - he is buried close to the childrens section. Do you remember Amber haggerman (the girl that Amber alerts are named after) well that happened around here and my grandpa went looking for her on his own SEVERAL times - well he is closets to her grave site. Grandpa has 7 children, and 26 grandkids and great grandkids. We are a VERY family oriented family. BUT it doesn't have to do with that either. I don't know and I'm probably giving you more info than you want but I was very close to him. I was pregnant w/ my son when he passed away (still early on so didn't know the sex)but that day my dh came up to me and said if it's a boy we are naming him after your grandpa. I think I had a son for a reason, my son acts SO much like my grandpa and he's only 17 months old.
Again rambling sorry = that was a little theraputic for me sorry about that...
ANyway, and ideas? It's kinda short notice the cake is for SUnday so I would have to finish it Saturday night. THANK YOU for any and ALL IDEAS!
How about a "family tree" design on the cake? A good way to remember everyone, past and present, and celebrate your family.
Sorry about your grandpa...losing anyone in your family is always a difficult adjustment- keep your head up!
As far as the cake, I was thinking a round cake and maybe cut little fondant kids out and put them on the side of the cake (or even just with icing). Have them all holding hands (or hearts joining each of their hands) in a circle. Something sentimental on the top like, "Love never ends" or "Love is a never ending circle". Good luck with the cake.
are you familiar w/ "Family Circus" by Bill Keane??
http://www.familycircus.com/
he often does a granpa in heaven drawing.
only example I could find:

possible something along those lines!? if not too maudlin.
Actually Doug I am familiar with it - I have one framed that says there's grandpa's cloud parked over there - or something alone those lines. My brother found it and framed it for me.
I like those ideas thanks... I like the ppl around a cake holding hands w/ hearts connecting them but not sure if its IT - kwim... I'lll keep thinking thanks.
I am sorry to hear about your grandfather, but from what you say, he must have been a wonderful & kind man.
I like the holding hands idea; let me offer one more idea.
See the attached image; it was called 'Celebration of Family';
The cake is not level, but wavy to sort of match the hill that the kids are running on; the stick people are supposed to look like kids drew them, and represent each kid in the family;(They are running with their ballons to touch the clouds); all surrounded by flowers.
Maybe you can use the idea & make changes to fit your family.
I can't wait to see what you finally design;
I hope that the family event serves up fond memories for you & creates great new ones for your family.
what about using the big book pan and making a scrapbook with pictures of the family?
Your story rings so true for me except it's grandmom. The few seconds you talked about him you can understand the love. My suggestion would be a garden with stepping stones with each kids name on it. Butterflies are alos good to place around on a memorial cake. The signifigance of the garden would symbolize love and growth. I hope that helps. please post whatever you do.
