Hey all!

I will be making my daughter's bday cake next week... I am loving all these cakes I see with the names spelled out in fondant and/or gumpaste, etc.

Is it just a matter of rolling it like a "playdoh snake" LOL and then just trying to shape the letters? I have a feeling there is more to it and just wondering if anyone has any tips or tricks.

It will be separate letters (not cursive) since I want to do every letter in a different color.. (rainbow)... although I would love to know how to do the cursive as well.

My thought was to print out her name on the computer and try to "trace" the font over the letters.. not sure I could make nice letters without a guide... anyone ever done it that way?

Thanks so much for any input!! icon_biggrin.gif

I am so excited... as I have been on somewhat of a hiatus lately being pregnant and having a new little one... but in the next month I have her bday cake, a baptism cake, another birthday cake, a 40th bday and 50th bday.. the last 2 being from "customers".
Let's see if I can handle it!!! icon_lol.gif

I don't know what to suggest if you're going after "cursive" letters, but if you don't mind block style, Wilton makes a set of letter/number cutters for fondant that you might want to check out

I have the Wilton set and have never been able to
take a single letter from it.I tried dipping the cutters in cornstarch, letting the gumpaste set for a while, to no avail.

My 2 cents.

Thanks so much! I have that set too.. and I agree... can never get the darn letters out nice.. my DH and I fight with them and by the time I get them out the letter is ruined... tried thick fondant, thin fondant.. etc... etc thumbsdown.gif

I am talking about names that are actually spelled out "3d" in fondant.. like this one from _ChristyB_:

But I will be doing printed.. not connected letters since they will each be a different color.

Hope that makes it more clear!

Thanks again! icon_smile.gif

If you are having trouble with the wilton set, roll the fondant nice and thin on a bench with pure icing sugar dusted on it. And now for the secret that works for me..... Hold the cutter off the counter and tap the top side with the back of a knife. The letter just drops straight out onto the counter. Works every time.
I think Christy Lee said that she just rolls out a snake and drapes it to form the name. You could do the same thing without joining them, but I think it would still look fairly cursive shaped but just cut the sausage when you have each letter shaped the way you want.
Good luck. I hope this helps.

Write the separate letters in a paper , cover the paper with wax or plastic transparent paper. Then make the rolls of fondant twisting and forming it over the traced letter.

I know exactly what you are trying to do! I did one recently for a graduation cake. It is in my photos ( the pink ballet cake). I just rolled my fondant out like a snake and formed my letters until they looked the way I wanted them to. They are not connected - each letter is seperate. Then I let them dry for several days so that they would stand up on my cake. It was really easy to do and I thought they came out well. If you mes up - just re-roll and try again! Good luck!!! icon_biggrin.gif

I've never tried to make letters etc. yet but wondered if you all knew that microsoft word has "word art" in it. You can print out what you want, the way you want it, cover it with wax paper and use it as a template. Just thought I would pass that along. icon_smile.gif
