Do you have any idea what color they use for the cap and gown? Personally I would do the maroon color but that is just MHO.

I would ask the customer what color the graduate's cap is or ask if the want a traditional black cap.

my suggestion is to ask. My high school colors were royal blue and white. Our caps were blue.

HS or College??

HS: call school and ask color of gowns (which cap almost always matches -- HS is so color coordinated!)

College -- Bachelors or Masters --> black
doctorate -- matches the color of the gown (and isn't always the classic cap --- more often some type of beret or other soft hat)

It's high school and she thinks the cap will be maroon but my concern is how that will look against the chocolate icing.

should look fine.

it's just a "red" against a "brown" two colors that go together fairly well.
