Luster Dust Do I Add Alcohol?
Decorating By MustloveDogs Updated 20 Jul 2006 , 9:54pm by MustloveDogs
Hello,
I am trying to use luster dust. The same dust that people use to make fondant balls look like pearls. I wanted to use it on a horse's mane and tried to paint it on dry but it just falls EVERYWHERE on the cake. Should I add clear alcohol to it and paint it on. Will that change the luster look or will it dry to look exactly the same as the pearls?
Many thanks!
Keira
Thanks Doug,
I am trying to get them really really sparkly and have used alcohol with the luster dust. Is there any other dust that I should get that will be more sparkly?
Do you want like a glitter sparkle or just a really shiny luster dust? I'm not sure what you can do to make luster dust any more shiny, but if you want a really cool glitter sparkle, Cakes By Sam has awesome pixie dusts which are literally edible glitter. I use their clear gold and hologram dust all the time and the colors are great too. And you can use it the same way by mixing it with alcohol to paint it on.
ok...now I'm aware of yet another bunch of toys -- oops -- mean important decorating tools -- i have to buy.
Absolutely toys! Tools make them sound major important and I completely think of this as major fun! The pixie dusts are just so cool, especially if you love sparkle! If you want to see them in action, in my photos, the disco ball on the 50th b-day cake is BC just painted with a ton of hologram dust, and then my tiara is painted with a couple of coats of clear gold dust. Unfortunately, the pics don't show how sparkley they are. Most of the time I just fling dry pixie dust on cakes--especially on roses.
Thanks! I think that is what I will need! I have used the luster dust with alcohol and it looks pearly, but I was going for sparkly pony manes along the lines of the my little pony toys.
