I have some leftover mmf that I thought I'd use to make pearls. I thought I'd roll out 'snakes' of different thicknesses and then cut and roll into pearls. I've read that you need to let these sit on a bed of cornstarch while they dry - can I just use flour? Any tips on an easier way to make these?? I think Earlene recommends using round tips as 'cutters' to make pearls - anyone tried this? TIA!

I made pearls for a bath cake and wanted varying sizes to look like bubbles. I didn't even use a cutter, just pulled off pieces of fondant and rolled into balls. If you need them the exact same size, try using a circle cutter and then rolling.
I wouldn't use normal flour, I think you are supposed to stick with things that are already in the fondant.
Pure icing sugar works well for me.
I have used tips as cutters all the time. The metal ones work well.

I have made lots of pearls this way, I use a #12 tip and roll them in luster dust/pearl dust and leave in an air tite container. Uniform and fast!

when I do this, I drop them in a plastic container w/ super Pearl dust and wait 'til they get really firm and dry (three-four days) then I sift them.. I also make the Tear Drop shape ones (photo below)

I love making edible pearls! I absolutely couldn't have done it without the help of the website: www.earlenescakes.com.
She has wonderful pictures and step by step directions on how to do this. My pearls came out perfect the very first time by following her instructions. icon_biggrin.gif

I've made these. I tried Earlene's method. Rolling it using the BBQ skewers makes the fondant all the same thickness, and using a decorator tip to cut them out ensures that each pearl will be the same size (important when you lay them on the cake next to each other). I wouldn't recommend putting them on a moist towel under saran wrap though. Mine were melting while sitting there waiting to be rolled. I just worked fast. They are time consuming, but if you watch tv while you are doing it you don't notice!

I place them on a terry towel to dry. Then I brush on the dust.

I have made them and they don't take too long at all. I made about 500 in a couple of hours watching tv. The tip worked real well just remember to put some icing sugar on the top layer and they won't stick together at all.
