I started my first cake decorating class on Monday and this was the first thing that was handed out. Number 1 and 9 gave me a big laugh so I thought that I would share it with my fellow decorating friends! Refering to 9 maybe I am missing the point but I thought that we were there to ask questions and learn the ENTIRE TIME!

The Ten Commandments of Cake Decorating as it is typed on the paper

The Ten Commandments of Cake Decorating
1. The WILTON way is the only way in class
2. Thou shall not suck icing from tips
3. Thou shall not lick icing from spatula, fingers or any other body part
4. Thou shall not wipe hands on clothes or apron for you shall use wet towel
5. Thou shall not over fill icing bags
6. Thou shall practice at home daily
7. Thou shall measure all ingredients
8. Thou shal read next weeks' lesson and prepare for that lesson ahead
9. Thou shal write down all questions to ask instructor before class
10. Thou shall remember to have FUN, FUN, FUN. while we learn!

I think the question thing is for when you are at home practicing, so you remember what you wanted to ask her the following week in class.

D'oh! I'm 3 for 10. (And that's only if it's ok if I wash my fingers after I lick them).

Well lets see...

1) Don't believe that anymore (although the "in class" part is true for the instructor since they are there to promote the co.)
2) I'm not THAT bad!
3) That was a hard habit to break!
4) I thought that's what aprons were for?!
5) Still working on that!
6) Every order is practice
7) I never measure anymore! Makes my icing taste better to just say "that looks like the right amount of vanilla"!
8 ) I was bad at that when I took the classes...come to think of it, I never did that in school either...vicious cycle!
9) Never did that either!
10) Anything to do with cake decorating is fun!

I hope your instructor isn't too hard on you and you are able to do #10!
Good luck,
HeatherMari

I've read so many threads about the Witon classes since I was planning on taking them soon and I've found that ALOT of people that don't know any better (for lack of better way to say it) will suck the icing from the tips, will lick their fingers, will lick the end of the tip, and the spatula, etc. etc.

There was a thread where a woman went in with her own icing and the woman next to her offered the bag she had just licked off of for her to practice with since it was different in some way... I would've puked right there on the spot had that been me lmao...

I think it's a matter of training your brain to remember this is for someone else's consumtion and you shouldn't do as you normally would.

When I'm decorating a cake I have had to train myself not to lick my fingers just because I'm so used to it lol.. It's something you pick up as a child and have to train yourself to NOT do it anymore. My husband has had to train himself from tasting the icing once completed because I told him I plan on making Cream Cheese icing sooner or later and he is deathly allergic to Cream Cheese.. so he's learning lol Also I wear gloves when decorating, that helps avoid the "want" or urge to lick your fingers... I'm sure that glove doesn't taste very nice lmao.

I also keep a bowl of hot water nearby to dip my tips into for quick clean up if needed on another color (I snap the lid on and shake vigorously and it cleans it nicely. I also keep a box of baby wipes next to me and a clean kitchen hand towel. I use the baby whips to clean up any spills or icing that gets on my hands or wrists or what have you and also to clean to spatula as needed (which is then dipped into hot soapy water and then into clean water for proper cleaning lol) and use the towel to whipe up anything too big for a babywipe. I keep Clorox wipes which contain bleach, at my "work station" to clean up before after and during, making sure of course there is no contact with the food at all lol. It helps because I'm allergic to bleach in a liquid form and can not clean with a bleach water solution without tearing my hands to bleeding shreds....

I don't have any animals or anything but I do have a child... an 8 year old who likes to sample things so I make sure I always have scraps, weather it's a top crown that wouldn't smoosh or a cupcake or even a small cake of her own made with leftover batter, a seperate bowl of icing and a seperate bag and tip and spatula and spoon so she isn't touching anything I'm working with. I explain to her if she licks her fingers she's on her own eating it lol I've explained alot of the cleanliness rules to her and she follows suit and cleans her work station before during and after and I've only caught her licking her fingers once and that was at the completion of her decorating so I didn't say much to her I just told her to go wash her hands with soap and water before touching the cake again and she did lol...

Training yourself for proper and cleanliness work habits is tough but it's a must! Even if you weren't in this work, selling to someone else for thier consumtion, would you want your husband or other relatives spit on your food?

My friend's dad's ex girlfriend made fried chicken on the grill one day while we were doing thier roof, she would pick up a piece of raw chicken off the plate lay it on the grill lick her fingers pick up another piece lay it on the grill lick her fingers so on and so on until it was all done.... NO ONE ate the chicken.... and yes she did get sick lol. It just goes to show other people are watching weather you think they are or not lol...

OMG icon_eek.gif you're right TheCakeGirl87 too funny!

Hahahahaha what a stupid joke straight from a Mad Magazine Show skit.

Your instructor probably doesn't know the list was so politically funny. Hahahahaha what a Marxist joke to order a person with the final Thou Shall have FUN, FUN, FUN after nine Thou Shall Nots!

icon_lol.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gif Well we live in a democratic and not a Marxist society thank goodness. So, since you paid for the class, you own the "Wilton Tip" - - - go right ahead follow rule number two and don't suck the icing, just get the dog to lick it instead. I think it is called Socialism! icon_surprised.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

Egad I am snorting my coffee now.......

Okay, okay really now, please nobody flame me for being political.
