Help With Icing Please!!!!!

Hello Everyone:
I am new at cake decorating, I took a wilton course but never practice though.
We are going to celebrate my son's birthday this coming saturday July 22, outdoors. The weather is suppossed to be in the upper 80's, and I need help with an icing for my cake.
The icing I always use is cream cheese and cool whip, but I am afraid it will be really soft or may go bad with the heat.
PLEASE SUGGEST ANOTHER ICING OPTION, I really don't like frostings that have shortening.
Does anyone one of you use store bought frosting? which one?
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

DO NOT use whipped cream, your cake will just melt-away. I use those store bought "tubs if icing" a LOT, and I've used all the brands, Betty Crocker (which I think is best), Pillsbury, etc... but I think they're all good. The only real difference besides flavor, is that if the title says "whipped", it's more "airy" & you may see air holes in your frosting. I REALLY like the vanilla though - great flavor. I would suggest using it, and putting the cake in the refrigerator over night. My fridge is on teh coldest setting, and then they tend to last forever, even in the heat. Of course I'm not sure what your humidity level is or if that will play a part - just a thought.
If you look in my gallery here, the 3 tier square wedding cake with the dark ribbon, and green & white rose buds, was covered in that vanilla frosting. And that was in 91 degree heat!!!!! The frosting DID get pretty soft, but I was not surprised. It didn't melt-off the side of the cake or anything, but I did put a dent in it from touching it by mistake. Luckily the florist just covered it up with roses =)
Good luck!
Try the crusting buttercream recipe. It's really good and tatse a lot like the buttercream dream icing . we had a heat wave here today and that icing was used to ice a cake for an outdoor park party and it stood up really well. didn't melt one bit and still tasted yummyyyy eveyone enjoyed down to the scraps.![]()

Ladies:
Thanks so much for responding to my request.
I think I will to prepare the buttercream frosting tonight and see how does it turns out.
Thanks for suggesting commercial icing that is also a good option.
You all are very nice and sharing people, thanks again.
Beautiful cakes O'Cakes.

Hello Ladies:
I came to say thank you for all your advise. I made a white/chocalate cake for my son's birthday party. I used a cream lemon filling and for the frosting I used 1 carton of Pastry Pride, 2 cream cheeses, 1 chocolate pudding mix. I decorated the cake the day before the party and had it in the refrigerator for the frosting to set. On saturday (the day of the party) I put my cake on the lid of my container (so melted ice wouldn't get in my cake) and sat it on ice. The frosting seemed like it was a little bit soft, but it tasted good and it stayed in place. Saturday was our hottest day, in Tacoma, WA (where I live) the thermometer reached 97 degrees. Where we had the party at was 87, so I guess 10 degress really made a difference.
Thanks again.
Greetings
