For those who have taken Wilton course 2:

Is there a reason why I would absolutely need to use that tiny oval cake pan for my final cake (the basketweave)? I don't really care for that little pan, and have a lot of people planning to eat the cake. I used a 9-inch round pan for all of my Wilton course 1 cakes, so I'd love to use that again here. When I asked my instructor, she kind of scoffed and said I could do whatever I want. I'm just wondering, will it be a lot harder, or near impossible? Do most people make the oval cake because it comes in the kit, and it doesn't really matter? I am really proud of the royal icing flowers and color flow butterflies I have made so far, and I don't want to mess everything up by using a different pan at the last minute.

Thanks!!

You can use whatever pan you want! The only advantage to the oval pan is that there is a guide in the book you can use to mark your cake for doing the basketweave. It is helpful, but certainly not necessary.

My Wilton instructor told us to which pan we were comfortable with. I found the round easier. I will use my oval pans for the first time on a cake this week to make flip-flops.

You can use any pan you want to!!!! I think it would be great to use the 9 inch pan. It won't be any harder. Have fun, that is what the classes are all about. Be sure and post a picture of your cake!!

Use what you want!! You paid for the class! As long as you do the basketweave on the 9" round, what possible difference does it make. My wilton instructor was so easy going that we had a huge variety of cakes and it was interesting to see how everyone did their basketweave on different shaped cakes. Quit stressing and remember to post your cake when done! Good Luck!

I think another reason might be that it looks more like a basket??? (altho there are round baskets too icon_lol.gif ) I am entering a cake in my county fair using that idea from class 2 and even bought some basket handles to add to the top of the cake. Good luck with your cake no matter what shape you use.

Shoot, yeah, do what you want! Just divide the cake into even-numbered sections. Some in my class even created lids for the basket with decorated cardboard and their flowers coming out. Loved it.

Well, let's see. I used a heart shaped double layer cake for that one! I love heart shaped pans...I just marked it off with the same tool and at every inch. You paid for the class, you can choose what you want. It's not like your gonna win a prize...we just get certificates.

I had students in my Wilton class do all kinds of shapes. It is not any harder to do it on a round cake, as long as you learn how to do the basketweave, I encouraged my students to get creative because after all that's what cake decorating is about!

I didn't use the oval pans for mine, and most people in my class didn't either. She should be happy that you want to do a larger cake---more basketweave required. icon_wink.gif

i agree...i used an 8" round for mine. although i didn't buy the course kit and now i kind of regret it because that's the only place you can get those darn pans and you can use them for so many different things! whatever you decide to do...i'm sure it'll be great. and definitely post a picture!

Okay, let's get to the nitty gritty on this.... Wilton 'suggests' the oval pan because that is what they want to sell. Period! You can use any size or shape you want to use. It's your cake, not to mention you are paying for the classes.

Here's the finished product. I did end up using my 9" round pan after all. I loved doing the basketweave. The next day, I made another for my sister's birthday (and my first FBCT too for my cousin's birthday!) I have had a busy baking weekend. I posted all the pics in my gallery. Thank you again for the help!
