I just ordered some masonite boards from sugarcraft. I just cover them with wrapping paper and cellaphane (sp?).
For my regular cakes, I use Masonite. I get it approx. $20.00 a sheet and the lumber yard cuts them into the various sized I need free. I have my name and address and phone # on the back of them and I have them numbered. I just tell folks to throw them up on my porch when they can. I cover them with freezer paper. I have a pretty good percentage come back to me. Plus, I can look on the order form and see which board is missing and who has it, so I can go get it if I feel the need. Wedding cake bases are cut by DH for me out of plywood.
I have a couple of masonite boards, a round and a square silver plateau, and one stand that I found in my cake supply shop (white square board with 1" feet ... here's a pic http://www.cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=gallery&file=displayimage&pid=155353 ). I also had some misc sized boards cut for me at Lowes.
For some "Drop-n-Run's", I use 3 cardboards taped together and covered in decorative paper.
Another option is a carved styrofoam base covered with fabric like Earlene Moore does on her cakes: http://www.earlenescakes.com/
I've done some cakes this way and it makes for an elegant presentation.

How do you do that? Do you have instructions? That is too gorgeous!!! TIA
I use a 2 or 3" high styrofoam, carved with slanted sides, 6" bigger than the size of the biggest cake. The fabric is basically tube-shaped with elastic on top and bottom. The styrofoam goes inside the tube fabric.
Earlene sells the instructions on how to make the fabric base on her site too if I remember correctly.
Thanks so much for that information! There is so much to learn here!!
