I need help deciding....I just make a FBCT that will cover the entire top of an 8 inch round. Anyway it has pink flowers, but the background is black. So I am trying to decide what color to ice the sides of the cake. Would people want to eat a black cake? I could ice it in pink otherwise. What do you think? If you have any pictures of black cake I'd love to see them!

I've always found that if a lot of black colouring is used it has a bitter under-taste. My husband and kids refuse to eat anything black now.

Good luck and be sure to post pictures!

The only black cakes i've done have been in black fondant. I dont think that would help much, would it??

black can be classy..

depending upon your point of view: it either becomes "gross" or becomese "fun & cool" when eaten and lips/tongue/teeth get a very funny color!

gross seems to be the choice of the PPP, AR types and fun & cool most little boys and ones how never grew up! icon_rolleyes.gif

____________

HINT: to make good tasting black: start w/ dark chocolate icing. need far less color to get black and don't get the awful taste that comes from using a TON of color to white into black

Well I didnt think of that, though I usually start with dark brown chocolate icing to make black so I dont have to use so much. I hadnt noticed it tasting bitter but I havent eaten a whole piece of cake that was black before either! Maybe I should do pink just in case....

I don't start with chocolate - maybe that's the trick! icon_surprised.gif

I like the idea of a black cake with that pink! Sounds cool!

I have also only made black fondant cakes...

The idea sounds great, but if you colored the whole top black, most people would probably scrape off that part of the frosting and not eat it because it would stain their teeth/tongue/lips. Pink with a black border and flowers could be cute though icon_smile.gif

I had a request for a black Over the Hill cake. It came out great! What I did was iced the cake with white buttercream then airbrushed it black to minimize the bitter taste and also the icing was still white underneath. I then trimmed the cake in purple, blue & red buttercream with purple hologram disco dust. I came out great and everyone enjoyed it!

Another idea would be to vertically stripe the sides of the cake in alternating colors of pink and black, or even more striking: pink, white, and black. To cut down on the black color, use it to highlight the pink and white colors. What I have done (with other colors), is to use the plain side of a basketweave tip for the two main (or lighter) colors, and a round tip for the darker color, then alternate is some pattern (pink, white, pink, black, pink, white, pink, black).

I like the idea of an all black cake I think it would be really nice with the pink. You could start a new trend in your area and be requested to make back and _______ cakes all the time! I know my neice would just love a black and pink cake, those are the colours she seems to wear the most!

Here is the cake I ended up doing. I decided to go on the safe side and not do all black. I think it turned out nicely, no one scraped off the black, and no one had black teeth...good news! Thanks for looking!!

That's a beautiful cake-I was thinking it was going to be more "light" pink, but I love the striking contrast in these colors!

Thanks everyone for your nice comments. It was fun to do. The flowers were not actually as "orangy" as they appear in the photo, but still bright, kind of a reddish pink.
