I really love your pics on how to cut and serve cake. Thank you for posting that. But i'm wondering if cutting the cake that way affects the amount of servings?
Will they be the same? What serving chart do you use?

Thanks!
Angie

There was just a thread about pm'ing:

If indydebi answers in the forum, more members will have access to her answer - and it will be available as a search topic later.

Well, when you're a true addict, you know you see the post eventually! icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

It's pretty close because I use the Wilton wedding cake chart as a guide and it always works out. You can almost do the math, less the missing corners.

Example:
- A 10" round cut into 2" strips would give you 5 strips.
- Cut each of those into 1" pieces would yield ten 1" pieces per strips.
- Times the 5 strips = 50 pieces.
- BUT...... since the corners are missing, it would be slightly less than that.
- The wilton chart shows a 10" round yields about 38.

So I bet I get at least 38 pieces easily.

I've rec'd a number of other inquiries on how many pieces I get by using my cutting method, so I FINALLY took the 10" pan and drew a circle around it on a big piece of paper and measured out the cuttings.

The wilton chart shows 38 pcs for a 10" pan. I got 42 using my method.

I did the same with the 12" pan. wilton chart shows 56 pcs .... I got 60.

Now, it's easy to draw nice straight lines on a piece of paper (paper is amazing that way ..... it will lay there and let you write anything you want on it! icon_wink.gif ) ... so while I got 10% more pcs (on paper), I would be conservative and go with the Wilton chart for number of pieces.

Now I think I better go look at indydebi's previous thread on how to use it.

ok, so does anyone have a drawing on how to cut like this? With every cake I do, I leave instructions as to how to disassemble the cake, how many servings each layer should yield and a diagram on how to cut the layers.
I have been using the wilton pictures, though I would never cut a cake like that, but I have no other pictures to put on the letter.

It would be neat if some bored person could create above said for all the popular sizes and shapes!

Well it looks like the only way to buy a new one is if you spend big bucks and get a silver one. Of course I didn't want to do that so I turned to eBay. I got one that was vintage but never used. They had several. Pretty cheep too.

I LOVE this way of cutting the cake make it more real, than the circle method. Would it be okay to share these instructions with the reception places? As I see some people hand out cutting guides adn instructions to brea down a tiered cake!

Oh heck yeah! If I didn't want it passed around and shared, I never would have posted it! Print it, bookmark it, show it to brides, whatever you want and need. I met with a bride just last night, who is getting a drop-n-run cake so she will be having a family member cut the cake. She asked about cutting charts. It was so easy to show her the website page with illustrated instructions .... she LUV'd it!
