Needing Tips For Using Cake Projector

Okay...this newbie now has a new toy! Would those of you who use the cake projector give me your method of using the projector?

Examples:

1. How do you fill in? Just pipe it in as stars after outlining the image or do you smooth the piped-in icing with spatula or brush?

2. Do you outline the image first and then fill in without the projector or do you do the entire image with the aid of the projector?

Any other tips would be great!! I am excited about using this and need to use it this week for a birthday cake but thought I would get the experienced bakers' tips and advice before trying it myself.

I don't have a projecter, but have been thinking about it. I'm just typing something so I can also get your answers when they are posted!

You really just need it to draw the outline. Two ideas for fill-in: colored piping gel or airbrush.
