So I have been trying to achieve the perfectly smoothed cake and of course realize its very hard to do. I'm working on perfecting round cakes now..and I know to use putty knives around the outside but I'm not finding tons of success with this..though im using a plastic one. Should I buy a metal one? Does it make a difference or am I just not doing it right? Thank you!

i vote metal...that's what the spatulas are made of...

and every time I've tried to use anything plastic on a cake, the icing just stuck and dragged horribly.

Metal:
Pros: You can heat it up in hot water for a smoother finish
Cons: They rust if you're not really careful

Plastic:
Pros: no rusting
Cons: be careful to keep the edges from nicking in the storage place; plastic and scratch and dent!

Thanks both of you so much. I think I'll definitely buy one for sure now! I just needed to hear that there were benefits to the metal ones before I bought one...there aren't as cheap as I thought they were otherwise I would have just bought one! Thanks againicon_smile.gif
