My 8" Pan Is Not Tall Enough, Does It Matter?

Hi, I'm making a stacked cake and I use 2" tall pans and level the cakes off in the pan so they are exactly 2" tall. I realized my 8" pan is only 1 3/4" tall, so with 2 layers I'll be 1/2" short on that cake. Will that be noticable when the whole cake is assembled? Or am I fretting over nothing.

I'm not sure how noticable it will be but I'm thinking that I need to measure my pans. ~ Hmmmmm.

If you're too concerned about it, maybe you could cut down your other cakes. You should still get a 4" high cake by the time you add icing.

I think it would depend on the cake design. You could use a collar made from parchment so your cake will bake a little bit higher, then you'd have the full 2" each. If you don't want to do that, I would try to make my other layers the same height, or close!

I've never had a guest walk up to the cake with a measuring tape.

No one will notice.

I'm sure no one will notice, after I cut my cakes to level them, and then ice them, they are approximately 4", never sure if they are exactly! You will be able to tell once you put them together and if it doesn't look right maybe add another 1" layer?

i had a 3 tier stacked cake this weekend and the top and bottom tiers baked higher than the middle. i just used my cake leveler and measured how high the middle tier was then i leveled all of the tiers to the same height. i had a lot of scraps left over but i plan on making cake balls. i over-filled my 8in pans and they had such a big dome i made my husband a mini cake out of the two humps.

A smaller cake will have the illusion of looking taller than a bigger cake. Because of this, on a stacked cake, I make the smaller cakes 1/4" shorter and the bigger cakes 1/4" higher.

I have been told that my cakes are so tall - compared to the area bakeries, etc. My are around 4".
