I have to make a graduation cap on top of an 8" round cake (it'll actually be a 2 tier cake 8" & 10") so I was thinking of using my 4" round pan and then making the top with 2 graham crackers... would this work and be easy to cover with fondant? Any tips on doing the tassle? Thanks!

Could you use 4 grahm crackers and make the bottom 2 in the opposite direction so that the top 2 dont snap in the middle? I did a tassel with the grass tip, but I'm not sure if this would work hanging down, mine was flat. Light bulb. Use the grass tip and royal icing.

thanks! yes, i'm going to do that... i was thinking about putting fondant on the graham crackers with buttercream underneath... bad idea after i thought about it for awhile... the bc would probably break down the cracker and make it flimsy, right? so how about royal icing covering the cap? would i be able to put fondant over royal icing and have it work like bc? i just don't want this thing to fall apart on the way to the party!

I'm doing one this weekend and I'm using 1/2 of the sports ball pan and the mortarboard is going to be NFSC. I can ice the cookie with royal icing in a royal blue color to match the school colors. My tassel will be made out of cross stitch floss in royal blue and white.

I'm going to be doing one too and I will use the 1/2 ball pan and top with a square of fondant with added Tylose that I make a few days ahead so it can dry out and become hard. No need to put anything such as crackers under it that way.

NFSC is No Fail Sugar Cookies you can do a search for it in the recipe section. They are good and pretty much hold their shape when they cook. I plan on cutting about a 7 1/2" square and baking that then icing it in Antonia's royal icing.

Thanks for the replies... I really don't have time to be making cookies as well for it so that's why I want to do the crackers... as for the ball pan, I just didn't like the way it looked in all the pictures I saw on here... so I'll be using the 4" round pan I have... it's just straighter and not so rounded on the top... well, thanks for the suggestions.

I'm making the whole thin out of gumpaste. I am rolling a circle and draping it over the bottom of a tupperware container. I am rolling the top into a square and once both are dry I will attach them and add a tassle out of fondant.
